DEAD RINGER

SEPTEMBER 24, 2023 | 1:00 PM

Location: Main Stage

713 Lake Avenue, Lake Worth Beach, FL 33460

Director Allan Nichols,  Drama / Comedy, USA, English, 1982, 100 min.

WHAT A LONG STRANGE TRIP ITS BEEN

In the early 80’s the actor and protégé of the great Robert Altman was asked by his friend Meat Loaf to shoot some music videos for an upcoming record release.  As these things transmogrify the project became a feature about a rock-and-roll star who, while under the pressures of a pending tour and album, discovers a doppelganger, a twin who loves to sing Meat Loaf songs. If this brief synopsis sounds bizarre it hardly compares to reality.  When, 15 min into the screening of the film for cast and crew, Altman and assorted friends, and family the movie was busted.  Local bailiffs arrived with their sheaves of papers forbidding a continuation of the showing. It seems that storm clouds of lawsuits appeared….. Meat Loaf was being sued by a songwriter, CBS was suing Meat Loaf’s management, Meat Loaf was suing his management, and even the record company was suing. The lawyers killed the showing and Nichols wound up taking his print to Montreal and showing it there. Thus Dead Ringer began its life as a ‘lost’ cult movie never to be distributed and rarely seen in the last 35 years. Karma and fortunate connections have brought Dead Ringer to the L-Dub Film Festival and we are honored to have this opportunity to show you this marvelous piece of movie history and legal mischief.

Writer/Director Allan Nichols will be available for a brief Q&A at the conclusion of the movie.
