What to Prepare:
All those auditioning should prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of the show. Songs from Kiss Me, Kate are also accepted. Please bring sheet music in the correct key; an accompanist will be provided. Tracks can also be used provided they are cued and ready to be played. A bluetooth device will be provided. Wear or bring clothing appropriate for movement.
About the Show:
Mixing Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with the backstage antics of a theater company, Kiss Me, Kate is a dazzling blend of comedy, romance, and showbiz magic — featuring Cole Porter classics like “Too Darn Hot,” “Another Op’nin’, Another Show,” and “So In Love.”
Available Roles (The Lake Worth Playhouse encourages people of all races, abilities, and genders to audition for the roles they most identify with.):
Fred Graham / Petruchio (Baritone, 30s–50s): The show’s leading man — a commanding, charming, sometimes egotistical actor-director. Must have strong vocal and comic skills.
Lilli Vanessi / Katharine (Mezzo-Soprano, 30s–50s): Fred’s ex-wife and co-star. A strong-willed, fiery leading lady with powerhouse vocals and emotional depth.
Lois Lane / Bianca (Mezzo-Soprano, 20s–30s): A flirtatious and fun-loving ingénue with a big personality. Great dancer with comic timing.
Bill Calhoun / Lucentio (Tenor, 20s–30s): Lois’s boyfriend — a charming gambler and actor with boyish energy.
Harry Trevor / Baptista (Baritone, 40s–60s): A seasoned actor playing Kate’s father in The Taming of the Shrew.
Hattie (Alto, 20s–40s): Lilli’s dresser — sassy, practical, and funny. Opens the show with “Another Op’nin’, Another Show.” Strong singer and mover.
General Harrison Howell (Baritone, 40s–60s): Lilli’s fiancé — a pompous, wealthy military man.
First Man / Gangster (Baritone, 30s–50s): Comic duo posing as gangsters; strong character actors with great timing and the ability to sing “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”
Second Man / Gangster (Baritone, 30s–50s): Comic duo posing as gangsters; strong character actors with great timing and the ability to sing “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”
Ralph (Any age, character role): Stage manager; practical and funny.
Gremio and Hortensio (Baritone/Tenor, 20s–40s): Comic suitors in The Taming of the Shrew play-within-a-play.
Paul (Baritone/Tenor, 20s–40s): Fred’s dresser; leads “Too Darn Hot.” Strong dancer and vocalist.
Ensemble (All vocal ranges): Actors, dancers, stagehands, wardrobe, and townspeople in The Taming of the Shrew. High-energy, versatile performers who can sing, dance, and handle quick changes between onstage/offstage personas.
