What to Prepare:
You don’t need to prepare any material in advance. At the audition, performers will read a few short scenes and use different voices to bring unique characters to life. You may also be asked to try out various dialects or accents. Because this is a radio play told entirely through voice and live sounds, strong vocal skills are essential. Most performers will take on multiple roles, and some may be asked to create sound effects using props, objects, or even their own voice. Others may be asked to demonstrate singing ability.
About the Show:
A staged recreation of the recording of the famous Mercury Theater On The Air’s adaptation of H. G. Wells’s 1898 novel The War of the Worlds, originally performed and broadcast live on radios throughout the country at 8 PM ET on October 30th, 1938.
The broadcast features a typical radio evening interrupted by news bulletins. Early reports describe explosions on Mars and an object falling near Grovers Mill, New Jersey. The situation escalates when a reporter describes aliens emerging and attacking a small farm.
Soon, astronomers become involved and a military response escalates the action as the Martians begin to take over more and more of the United States.
This production will feature 2 live FOLEY ARTISTS who will produce all of the sound effects LIVE on stage as well as performers to read/sing live commercials.
